A WEEKLY MESSAGE
FROM DEACON SUBBY ENZOLERA
What Is Advent All About?
During this first Season of our liturgical year, we prepare for the advent, or the coming of Christ. In our Catholic Faith, during this Season of Advent we not only prepare to celebrate the first coming of Christ at Christmas, but also to receive him into our hearts through the sacramental life of the church, especially in the Holy Eucharist and also for his return in glory at the end of time.
As we prepare for Christ’s birth at Christmas, we celebrate with many traditions that have been handed down through the ages. Families recite prayers and light the candles of the Advent wreath, reminding us of the four themes of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. We setup nativity scenes, children open windows of Advent Calendars day by day in anticipation of Christmas Day, and we setup our Christmas tree with strings of colorful lights and ornaments. And finally we show our love by giving gifts to our family and friends. All these wonderful acts are steeped in long standing traditions, meant to enrich our preparation for his coming. Our secular world has embraced many of the christian traditions, which, at first, seems like a good thing. Unfortunately, these traditions have been vastly misused. People string up miles of fancy lights and elaborate decorations, without a nativity or sign of Christ to be found. Billions are spent on merchandise, with much of it being given to impress rather than to express the true love and joy of the season.
We must stay true to our Catholic values during this season. Celebrating traditions are great, so long as we keep them centered on the true meaning of the season, his coming. We need to remember that Christ humbled himself to come into this world, born in a manger to a family of meager means and live among us. He befriended a bunch of fishermen to be his first disciples.
Likewise, we need to humbly invite him into our lives through awesome programs like ALPHA, to build a true and lasting relationship with him. To receive him, body, blood, soul and divinity through reception of the Most Holy Eucharist.
And finally to prepare ourselves to be called on our judgement day. In the gospel on this first week of advent, Jesus warns us of the what will happen when The Son of Man will come in a cloud of power and great glory. Some of those who are not prepared will die of fright in fear of what is coming, but those who are prepared should stand erect and raise our heads for their redemption is at hand. We must be
prepared.
During this Advent Season let us live in Hope, trusting in Christ's promises, in the Peace and Joy brought by Christ's birth, and share the Love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. So, setup your tree and nativity, say prayers as you light the candles of your advent wreath, and give gifts to family, friends and the less fortunate. Just don't forget the reason for the season.
Blessings,
Deacon Subby Enzolera

How would you like to bless another family this year with something as simple as prayers? I am looking for parishioners to pray for Parish Religious Education, PRE, families. These families will be learning about the seven sacraments this year and some of them will even have family members making their First Reconciliation/ Communion or Confirmation. There is a basket on the table at the back of church. Please pick a card and pray for this family through our PRE year, now through April. What a wonderful way to share God’s goodness with others…prayer.
Spending Time with the Saints
This year, during our Wednesday evening Family Classes for Religious Education (PRE), we decided to add something new. During the months of September, October, November, February, March, and April, we will be doing Saints and S'mores!
At our Family Classes during these months, we will do our closing prayer acknowledging and praying to certain Saints and then enjoying S'mores!
For each of these 6 classes, we will need graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars. If you would like to donate to this part of our program to offset the costs of these items…it would greatly appreciated.
Please contact Sue Reed in the Parish Office or put your donation in an envelope labeled S'mores and place it in the weekly collection basket. Thank you for being supportive of this wonderful program.
Thank you to all PRE & School families and Parish Members that generously gave to this year’s Boxes of Joy project. With all of your help, we will be blessing 92 children this Christmas season. Thank you again!

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE SCHEDULED AND CANNOT MAKE YOUR SCHEDULED TIME, YOU WILL NEED TO FIND A SUB.
The season of Advent presents us with some amazing persons as examples of vocation – doing the will of God in our lives. These are John the Baptist, our Blessed Mother, and St. Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus. They all lived their vocation really well! How do we know we are living in keeping with God’s vocation for us? When we seek God, when we cry out to Him, He will answer us. He will show us the way we ought to go when our hearts are completely open to Him. Not only will He show us, but He will guide us and grant us the grace to do and to be all that He is calling us to. God does not just point to a mountain, He shows us the way around it, He gives us grace and the strength to overcome it, it takes us into His arms and carries us over it.
This Advent, as we prepare our hearts and minds for Christ’s coming, may we faithfully embrace our call to vocations with hope and trust and find strength in prayer as we seek God’s direction in our lives. May our parish community of St Bernadette and Holy Ghost support one another in our spiritual journey, fostering an environment where vocations can flourish.
Are you open to being led by the Holy Spirit into the state in life God has prepared for you? If you are in need of resources for marriage or considering a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, please contact Father Boyd or email: vocations@archomaha.org.
The following parishioners of St. Bernadette are now or recently have been in the hospital or are having health issues and in need of our prayers. May these parishioners and all from our Parish Family who suffer from health issues find strength and the healing presence of God.
