A WEEKLY MESSAGE
FROM DEACON TOM SCHULTE
Brothers and Sisters,
This week a good friend of mine who lives in Idaho, had a double mastectomy surgery because she was diagnosed with cancer. I messaged her after and in our conversation when she told me about her experience I said, “All of this must feel kind of weird and other world like”. She replied, “So true! That is exactly how I feel! Like I am a puppet!!”. I responded, “The longer we live, the more we realize that we are really only a "passenger" in life … we are not the "pilot".
Our conversation made me think a lot about my own life … and about how I hate it when I am not in CONTROL. When I look at how I live my life, I realize that I am, and have always been, a person who works to control the events of my life. It helps me to mitigate the unknowns as much as I can and make my own life more predictable and manageable. I think most of us probably do that because as human beings, it’s natural to want to be in control of our lives. It’s deeply ingrained in our psyche, and it impacts how we navigate life. Having control is important and in itself is not unhealthy as long as we don’t become freaks who try to control everyone around us in the process. When we decide to take control (and responsibility for) our life, we are choosing to shape our story and the outcomes that they will most likely someday put in our obituary 😊. It certainly seems true that if we don’t maintain control of our life, we will be like a boat without a rudder and the waters of life will probably take us somewhere we don’t want to go.
SO WHAT HAPPENS in those times that we cannot control what happens to us in our life? Those times (like my friend’s) when we realize how little control we really have?
I was making a retreat once and the priest giving the retreat, when talking about this topic, said, “You don’t even have control over your next heartbeat”. It freaked me out to think about that as I sat there knowing my heart was beating and I had NO CONTROL over it. But when you think about it, there are many things in our lives that we take for granted but really do not have complete control of; Our Health – Our Relationships – Other People’s Opinions/Lifestyles/Choices –Peace in the World/Our Country– Financial Security – Family Strife – and the list can go on and on and on.
The stark truth is, most of this life we are living is largely out of our control and loaded with more uncertainty than we would like to admit. But there is one thing that is CERTAIN … one thing that is LASTING … one thing that is UNCHANGING … and that is God’s love for us! We cannot control most things in our life, but we can always control our response to the Creator’s love for us. All God asks of us is to ACCEPT His life-changing love and enter His gift of everlasting life.
There is a perfect prayer that gives control back to the God who created us: God grant me the serenity – to accept the things I cannot change – courage to change the things I can – and wisdom to know the difference.
Blessings to you all and your families,
Deacon Tom Schulte

Thank you to all who helped write notes on 1,500 post cards that were sent to Catholics in Nebraska. We are very, very grateful for you. The lives of many babies will be saved because of you!

In case you missed it, a BIG congratulations to longtime parishioner and Holy Ghost choir director, Benjamin Baber who recently received the honor of "Man of the Year" at this year's car show. Ben has been a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Parish. He attended Holy Ghost Catholic School through the 8th Grade and was also an altar server. Since he was a young boy, Ben helped with the June Jamboree and continued to support each year until the final June Jamboree event in 2019. He has worked as a dishwasher for the famous Holy Ghost Fish Fry's, Chicken Dinners, and Turkey Dinners. Ben has served on the Liturgy committee and the committee for the merger of both Holy Ghost and St. Bernadette into one Parish Family. Ben has served as the choir director for Holy Ghost for almost 20 years. Please join us in celebrating and honoring Benjamin Baber as our "Man of the Year" for 2024.

ST. BERNADETTE PARISH NEWS
The following section contains news and information on clubs, activities, special events and ministry initiatives specific to St. Bernadette Parish.
Please help support St. Bernadette Home and School at these upcoming Family Food Nights. Please mention St. Bernadette when ordering your meals.
First Tuesday of every month Don & Millie's - Bellevue, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Nov. 21 at McDonald's - LaVista from 4 to 8 p.m.
Dec. 3 at Texas Roadhouse - Shadow Lake from 4 to 8 p.m.
Important things are happening in the month of November. At our Family Class we learned and talked about Baptism. Not only what it is but our parents’ shared stories about their own and their child’s baptism day. Remember to take time to celebrate this special day every year! As you pray as a family this month, each day be thankful for something different. In doing this, each of us will realize how thankful and blessed we are!!
Important Dates:
11/13- Reconciliation Class and Confirmation Retreat for 8th graders
11/20- Sacrament Classes for Reconciliation and Confirmation
11/27- No Classes- Happy Thanksgiving!
How would you like to bless another family this year with something as simple as prayers? I am looking for parishioners to pray for Parish Religious Education, PRE, families. These families will be learning about the seven sacraments this year and some of them will even have family members making their First Reconciliation/ Communion or Confirmation. There is a basket on the table at the back of church. Please pick a card and pray for this family through our PRE year, now through April. What a wonderful way to share God’s goodness with others…prayer.
Spending Time with the Saints
This year, during our Wednesday evening Family Classes for Religious Education (PRE), we decided to add something new. During the months of September, October, November, February, March, and April, we will be doing Saints and S'mores!
At our Family Classes during these months, we will do our closing prayer acknowledging and praying to certain Saints and then enjoying S'mores!
For each of these 6 classes, we will need graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars. If you would like to donate to this part of our program to offset the costs of these items…it would greatly appreciated.
Please contact Sue Reed in the Parish Office or put your donation in an envelope labeled S'mores and place it in the weekly collection basket. Thank you for being supportive of this wonderful program.
Boxes of Joy!
The Parish Religious Education (PRE) and St Bernadette School students are working together once again this year to fill Boxes of Joy. We will fill these boxes with goodies and then they will be distributed to children in Guatemala, Dominican Republic, and Malawi. We want them to have a very Merry Christmas. There will be a list in the back of church on the bulletin board, please help us out and donate some items. A collection box will be in the back as well. Also, it is $9.00 per box to mail so a monetary donation is also greatly appreciated. Contact Sue Reed in the Parish Office for more information.
This year we will once again be doing the Boxes of Joy. Collection of items will be in September and October. If you would like to shop for some items now, that would be great. We will have a collection basket in the back of the Church.
A couple of "Boxes of Joy" team members went on a mission trip, and below are some of the items they noticed the children really liked:
Playing cards, card games (UNO, GO FISH, etc.)
Crochet hooks and yarn,
Craft items or kits, (beads, pipe cleaners, bracelet string)
Small playing balls, (can be deflated)
Matchbox cars
Lego sets
Solar digital watches
Calculators.
Remember that we can not include liquid of any kind in these boxes.
Continue to watch for more Boxes of Joy information!

As mentioned last week, Vocation Awareness Week was celebrated at our school. Along with sending postcards, receiving daily prayer bookmarks, and talks from a seminarian and sisters, St. Bernadette School students signed Vocation Promise Cards. These cards encouraged thought about their futures, with a signed pledge: I glorify you, God, in all that I do. In mind, body, and spirit I give my best to You. Help me to follow your will No matter the call: Sister, brother, or priest, I promise my all. If you call me to marriage, I promise to love, And to teach my own children To seek grace from above.
Are you open to being led by the Holy Spirit into the state in life God has prepared for you? If you are in need of resources for marriage or considering a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, please contact Father Boyd or email: vocations@archomaha.org.
