A WEEKLY MESSAGE
FROM DEACON AL AULNER
There once was a man who truly hated his neighbor. He believed he was justified because of the way his neighbor acted. The neighbor played loud music late into the night, he had dilapidated cars in the driveway that were eyesores to passersby. He didn’t care for his lawn and left trash cans open, allowing debris to be scattered by the wind. He had dogs that barked constantly and when asked by the
man to correct the issues he refused and cursed the man, telling him to mind his own business. One Sunday at Mass the priest reminded everyone to “love their enemies” and to even pray for them to go to heaven. After Mass the man’s wife asked if he was going to say a little prayer for the bad neighbor. The man said he already had and added “I pleaded with God to take him to heaven and if possible, to do
it today! Not exactly a good prayer but I think many of us can relate.
Sunday’s gospel is about loving one’s enemies, but not just an abstract enemy or far off countries that have threatened us, although we are called to pray for them. The gospel is also talking about people who are close to us; neighbors, co-workers, family members, maybe someone living under the same roof, who are difficult to love, you know, the people who drive you crazy. We all have those people or that person who can determine if we have a good day or bad day by simply walking in the door. We all have enemies close at hand.
We are reminded this weekend that we are called to love everyone “to be perfect as God is perfect”. The Greek word used for “perfect” means to be “complete or fully accomplished”. In order to love those who are difficult to love we need to be completely emersed in doing the will of God and not obsessed doing our own will. We have to become the person God has in mind for us and not who we
want to be. Only in humility will I be able to set my thoughts aside and ask God how do I love this person? Only by surrendering to God, will I be able to honestly pray for someone who I see as a threat or for someone who has done me harm. On my own I am incomplete, and on my own my enemies stay my enemies. Only through Jesus am I complete enough to see my enemies as God sees them and only
by his grace can I begin to want good for them. It can be very hard to pray for and love some folks. It will take time, and it takes many acts of the will, but it is what Jesus says we must do. Jesus sets the standard at loving our enemies and gives us the means by his grace to do it. The reward is great! The reward is having hate, stress and strife removed and replaced with joy and peace forever!
I’ll pray for you, please pray for me.
Deacon Al

Lent: A Time for Reflection, Action, and Generosity
This Lent, consider how your sacrifices, actions, and generosity can support vocations! Things to Give Up
Complaining—Instead, pray for priests, religious, and those discerning. Social Media Scrolling—Use that time to read about a saint who followed their vocation. Fear of Speaking About Vocations—Encourage young people to consider God’s call.
Things to Do - Pray a rosary for more vocations each week. Write a note of encouragement to a seminarian or religious sister. Attend daily Mass or Eucharistic Adoration and pray for discerners.
Ways to Give - Support the Archdiocese of Omaha seminary fund. Donate vocation-related books to our parish or school. Sponsor a meal for Father Boyd, Father Flott, or a local religious community. Lent is a season of conversion—how will you use this time to support vocations?
Are you open to being led by the Holy Spirit into the state in life God has prepared for you? If you are in need of resources for marriage or considering a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, please contact Father Boyd or email: vocations@archomaha.org.

MISSION TRIP TO GUATEMALA
Spirit of Solidarity – Join Us on A Mission
Since 2004, parishioners from across the Archdiocese of Omaha have gone to our sister diocese in Huehuetenango, Guatemala to work alongside our sisters and brothers in Christ. Ixim missionaries build bridges of understanding and solidarity by learning about the lives and realities of those in Huehuetenango.
Over the years, Ixim missionaries have staffed medical clinics, taught lessons at local schools, applied fluoride treatments to children, assisted with reforestation projects, painted parish and school buildings, and helped implement clean water projects. Our 20th trip will be June 12 – June 23, 2025.
Learn more about our mission trip at an upcoming information meeting: Contact Charlie for Zoom links or to reserve a spot at an in-person information meeting: cpetro@archomaha.org or 531-218-6354 (call or text).
