A WEEKLY MESSAGE
FROM DEACON TOM SCHULTE
I was reminded recently about what it can mean to share our “appreciation” to others; especially those who might never expect to hear it. My reminder came reading an email that my daughter, Jenny sent to her work team just after Christmas. Like a lot of workplaces, there was a Christmas party and a gift exchange between coworkers. We have probably all been involved in something similar with workers or family. Jenny’s email reminded me that even a simple gift given in a gift exchange can bring great joy … and sharing that joy with the gift “giver” and others can multiply that joy.
Here is the email (with picture of a puzzle) Jenny sent to her co-workers:
Good morning,
I just wanted to thank the person that threw this puzzle into the white elephant exchange this year. I have to be honest. I did not want this gift and tried really hard to give it away. Fast forward to Christmas day at my house. My youngest son (19 years old) opened it and said, “Hey mom, if I put this together can we go here?” My oldest daughter reminded me that she traveled there with her husband (how did I forget
that?). This started what has turned out to be some really special bonding at the table. Different family members would stop and work, leave, and come back. We celebrated a birthday get together later in the month and some extended family members got to participate and had fun trying to find pieces. Yesterday this puzzle was completed finally and we left the last piece for our son. Blessings find their way into our lives in unexpected ways. I hope you are all finding blessings where you would least expect them. Keep your eyes open. They are there.
Thank you for providing this for me. Jenny
Blessings certainly DO “find their way into our lives in unexpected ways”. After I read Jenny’s email to her co-workers, my thought was, “I wonder who got more unexpected blessings? Was it Jenny and her family, or was it the co-workers who read her thank you note?”
Let us never forget that if you are given a blessing, that blessing can be deepened and increased when shared with others. That is what God intended for us when he shared His Holy Spirit with us at our Baptism and Confirmation.
Wishing you all unexpected blessings to share,
Deacon Tom Schulte

PARISH FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Gospel is from John 2:1-12. There are many lessons we can learn from this incident in Christ's life: for example, Christ's approval of marriage–there were some heretical sects later who said marriage was sinful, unfit for a Christian. Or we could see in it the intercessory power of our blessed Mother. Christ anticipated his "hour" for working miracles in order to grant her request. But the theme of today's readings is the goodness 'and kindness of God and we surely have a convincing proof of that loving kindness in today's gospel story.
Christ worked his first miracle in order to grant a temporal favor, an earthly gift, to save the newly-married groom from embarrassment. It had the other effects of convincing his very recent disciples of their belief that he was the expected Messiah, and also it convinces all Christians of the efficacy of our Lady's intercession for us, but its primary purpose was to confer a temporal benefit on the groom.
By this kind act he has shown us that he is interested in our earthly affairs also. He became man in order that we could become sons of God, he came on earth so that we could go to heaven, but this miracle at Cana proves that he has a deep interest in our many and varied activities during the course of our journey to heaven.
He told us "ask and you shall receive." That "shall" is very definite, our prayers will be answered, and what we should ask for is not only spiritual gifts, but the temporal aids also which we need. The "shall" applies to them too, as the miracle of Cana proves. We shall get our temporal requests, provided of course that they won't impede us on our journey to heaven. No kind father would give his child a gift that would injure him–God is the kindest of fathers and he sees what will or will not impede or endanger our eternal happiness. We can and should therefore make our temporal needs known to God in our prayers, confident that he will give us what we ask if it is for our real good.
But, someone may object: how often have I asked God for temporal favors I needed so badly, and my prayer was unanswered? Was it unanswered really? Perhaps you did not get the exact thing you asked for but you got something more useful, more necessary, something you never thought of asking for, but the good God saw your need of it. We have a father in heaven who really loves us, and cares for us, let us make our temporal, as well as our spiritual needs, known to him in confident prayer. Our requests will not go unanswered. —Excerpted from The Sunday Readings by Fr. Kevin O'Sullivan, O.F.M.
Get Ready for the 2025 Nebraska Walk and Rally for Life!
Pope Francis ushered in the New Year with an appeal for the faithful to reject abortion calling for a “firm commitment” to protect and respect life from conception to natural death. The Nebraska Walk for Life shows our commitment to respect life at conception.
Please join us Saturday, February 1st in Lincoln for Nebraska’s largest rally for life. The Nebraska Right to Life hosts this annual event which draws thousands of pro-lifers to the Nebraska State Capitol to stand up for preborn babies and their mothers. This is the longest-running, largest pro-life event of the year! Together, we pray and walk in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to abortion as well as for those who have suffered because of abortion. This year will be the 52nd year for the Walk for Life event in Nebraska.
A short rally will begin on the north steps of the State Capitol, beginning at 10:00 a.m. (immediately following Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church). After the rally, we will begin our Walk together to our final destination at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel to hear from guest speaker Elizabeth Gillette.
Elizabeth writes and speaks about how love conquers the greatest tragedy of our time: abortion. Like so many women, Elizabeth has experienced abortion first-hand. The traumatic experience shook her faith and caused devastating side effects. Through the saving grace of Jesus Christ, she found healing and forgiveness. She is now the mother of four living children and a passionate advocate for life.
If you any questions or if you would like to carpool to this rally, please call Linda Krupa (402-932-4353) or Rita Frickel (402-734-3573).
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT!
A HUGE thanks to our volunteers and everyone who came out to our recent Chicken Dinners! We are so grateful for your continued support of our parish. We hope to see everyone at our fish fry's coming up in March!
In case you missed it, our friends at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church celebrated the 50th anniversary of their annual polish festival on Sunday, August 18. Dozens of volunteers worked all summer long creating 26,591 handmade pierogis: a popular polish dumpling filled with kraut, potato and cheese.

Q. Wouldn’t it solve the priest shortage if priests could get married? A. Perhaps more men would choose the priesthood, but the question is, “Would this be what is best for the Church?”. Catholic priests do not marry as to dedicate themselves completely to Christ and His people. Celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom is a powerful sign that Jesus is real! And, that He is worth living for, sacrificing for, and dying for. In many parts of the world, vocations to the religious life and the priesthood have dramatically increased. In contrast, in the U.S. and Western Europe, they have dramatically decreased. The problem is not the requirement of celibacy; there are more complex social dynamics at work.
Are you open to being led by the Holy Spirit into the state in life God has prepared for you? If you are in need of resources for marriage or considering a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, please contact Father Boyd or email: vocations@archomaha.org.

MISSION TRIP TO GUATEMALA
Spirit of Solidarity – Join Us on A Mission
Since 2004, parishioners from across the Archdiocese of Omaha have gone to our sister diocese in Huehuetenango, Guatemala to work alongside our sisters and brothers in Christ. Ixim missionaries build bridges of understanding and solidarity by learning about the lives and realities of those in Huehuetenango.
Over the years, Ixim missionaries have staffed medical clinics, taught lessons at local schools, applied fluoride treatments to children, assisted with reforestation projects, painted parish and school buildings, and helped implement clean water projects. Our 20th trip will be June 12 – June 23, 2025.
Learn more about our mission trip at an upcoming information meeting: Contact Charlie for Zoom links or to reserve a spot at an in-person information meeting: cpetro@archomaha.org or 531-218-6354 (call or text).
