WEEKLY MESSAGE
FROM FATHER PHIL FLOTT
St. Vincent de Paul
Friday we celebrated the feast of St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) Parts of his life read like an adventure movie. He was ordained a priest at only 19. He was captured by pirates and was their prisoner for two years, until he escaped. He hired himself out as a tutor for a rich family. He had a crisis of faith that lasted four years. Finally, he became pastor of a parish near Paris.
One day he went to help out a poor family. He asked others to supply the needs of this poor family. Administration was one of his gifts, as well as mercy. He quickly arranged a system of helping the poor in an orderly fashion. His groups quickly spread in France.
St. Vincent advised us that the poor are the face of Christ. If they don’t have the same upbringing as us, that’s OK. Christ himself became poor, for our sakes. So, if the poor ask us for help, we should know that it is Jesus whom we are helping. May the Holy Spirit help us all in our work with St. Vincent.

In case you missed it, our friends at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church celebrated the 50th anniversary of their annual polish festival on Sunday, August 18. Dozens of volunteers worked all summer long creating 26,591 handmade pierogis: a popular polish dumpling filled with kraut, potato and cheese.
In case you missed it, Holy Ghost held its 2nd Annual Car Show! We loved seeing all the cool, classic cars fill up our Holy Ghost parking lot. Thanks to EVERYONE who participated and entered their car, truck, or motorcycle into our car show.
In case you missed it, a BIG congratulations to longtime parishioner and Holy Ghost choir director, Benjamin Baber who recently received the honor of "Man of the Year" at this year's car show. Ben has been a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Parish. He attended Holy Ghost Catholic School through the 8th Grade and was also an altar server. Since he was a young boy, Ben helped with the June Jamboree and continued to support each year until the final June Jamboree event in 2019. He has worked as a dishwasher for the famous Holy Ghost Fish Fry's, Chicken Dinners, and Turkey Dinners. Ben has served on the Liturgy committee and the committee for the merger of both Holy Ghost and St. Bernadette into one Parish Family. Ben has served as the choir director for Holy Ghost for almost 20 years. Please join us in celebrating and honoring Benjamin Baber as our "Man of the Year" for 2024.

3rd Annual October Pro-Life Diaper Drive Supports “Walking with Moms in Need”
The St. Bernadette Altar Society in cooperation with the Omaha Urban Council of Catholic Women (OUCCW) is sponsoring a diaper drive for the month of October benefitting the Omaha Archdiocesan Pro-Life Organizations.
This is an opportunity for all of us to Walk with Moms in Need who choose not to have an abortion and who need our help in supporting their baby.
We are requesting diapers in all sizes, especially sizes 5 & 6. Monetary donations are welcome and will be used to purchase diapers.
Checks should be payable to St. Bernadette Altar Society and placed in the collection basket or mailed to Theresa Yost, 13605 So. 45th Street, Papillion, NE 68133.
Diapers can be placed in port-a-cribs found on both the upper and lower levels of St. Bernadette church. Your participation is greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you for your support.
As we start our second month of PRE, we will begin learning about the Sacraments. We will learn what they are and why we receive these beautiful gifts.
Important Dates:
10/1- Family Class & Saints and S'mores
10/9- Sacrament Class for Confirmation & Reconciliation Retreat for child and parent
10/16- Sacrament Class for Reconciliation & Confirmation meeting for those in 7th grade or their first year of Confirmation preparation.
How would you like to bless another family this year with something as simple as prayers? I am looking for parishioners to pray for Parish Religious Education, PRE, families. These families will be learning about the seven sacraments this year and some of them will even have family members making their First Reconciliation/ Communion or Confirmation. There is a basket on the table at the back of church. Please pick a card and pray for this family through our PRE year, now through April. What a wonderful way to share God’s goodness with others…prayer.
Spending Time with the Saints
This year, during our Wednesday evening Family Classes for Religious Education (PRE), we decided to add something new. During the months of September, October, November, February, March, and April, we will be doing Saints and S'mores!
At our Family Classes during these months, we will do our closing prayer acknowledging and praying to certain Saints and then enjoying S'mores!
For each of these 6 classes, we will need graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars. If you would like to donate to this part of our program to offset the costs of these items…it would greatly appreciated.
Please contact Sue Reed in the Parish Office or put your donation in an envelope labeled S'mores and place it in the weekly collection basket. Thank you for being supportive of this wonderful program.
Boxes of Joy!
The Parish Religious Education (PRE) and St Bernadette School students are working together once again this year to fill Boxes of Joy. We will fill these boxes with goodies and then they will be distributed to children in Guatemala, Dominican Republic, and Malawi. We want them to have a very Merry Christmas. An information letter will go home this week to PRE and School families. I will also have a list in the back of church on the bulletin board, please help us out and donate some items. A collection box will be in the back as well. Also, it is $9.00 per box to mail so a monetary donation is also greatly appreciated. Contact Sue Reed in the Parish Office for more information.
This year we will once again be doing the Boxes of Joy. Collection of items will be in September and October. If you would like to shop for some items now, that would be great. We will have a collection basket in the back of the Church.
A couple of "Boxes of Joy" team members went on a mission trip, and below are some of the items they noticed the children really liked:
Playing cards, card games (UNO, GO FISH, etc.)
Crochet hooks and yarn,
Craft items or kits, (beads, pipe cleaners, bracelet string)
Small playing balls, (can be deflated)
Matchbox cars
Lego sets
Solar digital watches
Calculators.
Remember that we can not include liquid of any kind in these boxes.
Continue to watch for more Boxes of Joy information!

This Tuesday we will celebrate the feast of St Therese of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church. St Therese chose the vocation of a Carmelite nun. “Charity gave me the key to my vocation. I understood that the Church had a Heart and that this Heart was burning with love. I knew that one love drove the members of the Church to action, that if this love were extinguished, the apostles would have proclaimed the Gospel no longer, the martyrs would have shed their blood no more. I understood that Love comprised all vocations, that Love was everything, that it embraced all times and places...in a word, that it was eternal! Then in the excess of my delirious joy, I cried out: O Jesus, my Love...my vocation, at last I have found it...My vocation is Love!”
If you feel God has given you the unique gifts suited for the priesthood or consecrated life, contact Father Boyd or email: vocations@archomaha.org.
