A WEEKLY MESSAGE
FROM DEACON GARY KRUPA
The Beatitudes: “Happy are they who…”
As a teenage Ryan High “Knight”, my friends and I would cruise L Street, Q Street and of course the curves of “Famous Fay” Boulevard; being young, we were looking for fun, excitement, and adventure…all which we thought were needed for happiness. As I matured and grew into professional and family life, happiness was thought to be found in wealth, power, pleasure and honor/fame. Yet, happiness seems fleeting and elusive, even when we possess these worldly things. Theologians tell us that these attributes which we believe lead to happiness in this world are merely substitutes for the joy and happiness found only in God. In this Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 6:17, 20-26), we hear Luke’s version of the Beatitudes which turns around – completely flips -our conventional wisdom of what constitutes true happiness.
While most are familiar with the Beatitudes, you know “Blessed are they who….”, many may not view these as a recipe for happiness. Yet, as Bishop Robert Barron and others point out, the word “Happy” can be substituted for “Blessed.” In a counterintuitive way, Jesus is pointing out that those who are able to be detached from the substitutes for true joy that we find in this life are preparing themselves for the true joy of eternal life with God. Author and theologian John Bergsma notes those who experience these “negative” beatitudes and afflictions should rejoice, as they “are signs that they (the faithful) are headed in the right direction.”
Luke than goes on to caution that “woe” will be to those who are rich, who are well-fed, who laugh now and who are honored. While the material world views these as indicators of success in this life, in Jesus’ view people who cannot detach themselves from these material things should, as Bersgma puts it, “be very concerned about their eternal salvation…”
Does this imply that God desires all of us to be poor, to be hungry, to weep, to have no laughter and to be hated by others. No, of course not. However, the Beatitudes serve as a reminder that we must not be attached/addicted to the material things or good feelings of this world. Perhaps we might look at the Beatitudes in the format proposed by Bishop Barron: “How Blessed are you – how happy are you – if you are not attached to material things, if you have not placed the goods that wealth can buy at the center of your concern.” This formula can be repeated for each of the Beatitudes…a formula for true eternal happiness whether one is young or young at heart.
Blessings to you and your family,
Deacon Gary Krupa

On Friday, February 14, we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Did you know that St. Valentine was a great witness of our faith? He was a priest in Rome who was martyred for performing Christian marriages that were against the law. He was put in prison and in his time there, he even performed miracles of healing.
Valentine’s acts of courage in the face of persecution have made him a symbol of love and commitment. As we continue through the month of February, let us all live liturgically by showing extra love to everyone in our lives. Show love to your family members, friends and even complete strangers.

Q. What are the qualities that the Church looks for in a candidate for the priesthood?
A. A good candidate is a practicing, believing Catholic man. He attends Mass at least weekly, prays daily, obeys the commandments, and tries to serve others. He must be mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy. He must be of at least average intelligence. And finally, he must be open to the will of God. Do you have these qualities? If so and one goes into the seminary, they are in no way committed for life. In fact, most vocation directors will say that the only way to really know that you have a vocation to the priesthood is to go to seminary and try. It will become more and more clear to you once you are in an environment where everyone is trying to discern the same question. Many men go the seminary, stay a year or two, and then leave. They are much better Catholics afterwards for the experience!
Are you open to being led by the Holy Spirit into the state in life God has prepared for you? If you are in need of resources for marriage or considering a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, please contact Father Boyd or email: vocations@archomaha.org.

MISSION TRIP TO GUATEMALA
Spirit of Solidarity – Join Us on A Mission
Since 2004, parishioners from across the Archdiocese of Omaha have gone to our sister diocese in Huehuetenango, Guatemala to work alongside our sisters and brothers in Christ. Ixim missionaries build bridges of understanding and solidarity by learning about the lives and realities of those in Huehuetenango.
Over the years, Ixim missionaries have staffed medical clinics, taught lessons at local schools, applied fluoride treatments to children, assisted with reforestation projects, painted parish and school buildings, and helped implement clean water projects. Our 20th trip will be June 12 – June 23, 2025.
Learn more about our mission trip at an upcoming information meeting: Contact Charlie for Zoom links or to reserve a spot at an in-person information meeting: cpetro@archomaha.org or 531-218-6354 (call or text).
