WEEKLY MESSAGE
FROM DEACON TOM SCHULTE
YARD SIGNS
Well, here we are in another election cycle and candidates for the two major parties are promising to make all our dreams come true and yard signs showing support for one or the other are popping up on properties all over America.
I was thinking about how passionate people get during an election and about how candidates work to win their votes by outlining their priorities and policies (if we are so blessed) or by sometimes making unbelievable (literally) promises that they plan to deliver on if elected. Some of these priorities, polices and promises are positive and tap into our “better nature” and some are negative and tap into our “other nature”. All are designed to persuade us that voting for a particular candidate will make our country, the world and our lives better.
Back to the “yard signs." Political yard signs have been used for decades, maybe centuries. Yard signs have a two-fold purpose; #1) To imprint the candidate’s name and short “descriptive promise” that goes with that candidate on voters’ minds, i.e. 2024 Truth, Hope, Decency or Make America Great Again. Purpose #2) To persuade an undecided voter to vote for the candidate that your neighbor or family member believes in. I am going to guess that this year millions of dollars have been spent on political yard signs – BECAUSE THEY WORK!
So … if yard signs work, and are effective in imprinting a person’s name and short descriptive promise in a person’s mind when viewed, and if others are persuaded to gravitate toward someone that a neighbor or family member believes in – WHY DON’T WE ALL HAVE “JESUS” YARD SIGNS IN OUR YARDS?
Think about it! What would happen if all of us who believe in the promises of Jesus put a “Jesus” yard sign in our yard? Let’s face it – The promises of Jesus are TRUE and have authentic, lasting power. Jesus has told us that if believe in Him and open our hearts and give our lives to Him – we will “live forever”. Jesus is the only one who can truly make our country, the world and our lives better. So we need to bring that truth to all. If all of us believers kept a Jesus sign in our yards always, and let His Holy Spirit guide our everyday life, how would our neighborhoods, our country and the world change for the better? What kind of conversation and CONVERSION would be started in our neighbors and family members when they saw your Jesus sign and then noticed the love of Jesus that you live out each day by your life?
Blessings to you and your families,
Deacon Tom Schulte

PARISH FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Meeting/Training
On Sunday, September 29, the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion from St. Bernadette and Holy Ghost gathered for a meeting/training to update them on the Local Law for the Archdiocese of Omaha and to get information about best practices that will better equip them to serve in their EMHC ministry.
Fr. Boyd invited Fr. Scott Hastings, Vicar General for the Archdiocese to teach us the Pastoral Polices concerning the EMHC ministry and to walk us through the practical practices needed to perform our responsibilities correctly. We were fortunate to have Fr. Scott as our instructor given his knowledge, presentation skills and position for the Archdiocese. In addition to the information Fr. Scott gave, he answered participants’ questions concerning their ministry and helped EMHC’s from both of our parishes be more comfortable performing their important ministry to our Parish Family.
Fr. Boyd will be meeting soon with the deacons to decide on practices for EMHC’s concerning taking communion to the homebound, nursing homes and hospitals. The goal will be to have all EMHC’s at both parishes following the same protocol when handling and distributing the Holy Eucharist.
Click on the images to the left to see photos of this EMHC meeting.
The Altar Society will have our Fall Bake Sale and Raffle after both Masses on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20. Please consider donating any items for our raffle and bake sale. Items for the raffle can include gift certificates, themed baskets (i.e. spa day, wine and cheese, game day, etc) or fall décor. Items and baked goods can be dropped off after 3 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 19. Our fundraisers help provide items needed for the church as well as scholarships for our students. Thanks in advance for your generosity. May God bless you!
The Serra Club of West Omaha invites you to a special Mass for Vocations on Monday, October 21, at 5:30 p.m. at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 8200 N. 30th Street in Omaha.
Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Tom Weisbecker to pray together for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life in the Archdiocese of Omaha.
After Mass, stay for our Meeting & Mixer and learn from our speaker, Deacon John Pflug, about his call to serve our Lord, his spiritual experiences along the way, and why prayer for vocations is so vital to the future of the Catholic Church.
Light refreshments will be provided. There is no cost to attend. All are invited! If you are interested in helping to build the Church locally through vocations support, contact Bruce Jefferies, Serra VP, at westomaha@serrainternational.org.
Learn more at serrawestomaha.org and follow them on Facebook @serrawestomaha.
The St. Vincent de Paul Parish Office is now accepting applications for an Administrative Assistant.

Since he was a young boy, Ben helped with the June Jamboree and continued to support each year until the final June Jamboree event in 2019. He has worked as a dishwasher for the famous Holy Ghost Fish Fry's, Chicken Dinners, and Turkey Dinners. Ben has served on the Liturgy committee and the committee for the merger of both Holy Ghost and St. Bernadette into one Parish Family. The St. Bernadette Altar Society in cooperation with the Omaha Urban Council of Catholic Women (OUCCW) is sponsoring a diaper drive for the month of October benefitting the Omaha Archdiocesan Pro-Life Organizations.
This is an opportunity for all of us to Walk with Moms in Need who choose not to have an abortion and who need our help in supporting their baby.
We are requesting diapers in all sizes, especially sizes 5 & 6. Monetary donations are welcome and will be used to purchase diapers.
Checks should be payable to St. Bernadette Altar Society and placed in the collection basket or mailed to Theresa Yost, 13605 So. 45th Street, Papillion, NE 68133.
Diapers can be placed in port-a-cribs found on both the upper and lower levels of St. Bernadette church. Your participation is greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you for your support.
This week take the time to pray a family rosary for vocations. Remember to log onto: omahavocations.org to count your rosary in the tally. Also, if you have any questions about the October lesson plans, please reach out to me.
Important Dates:
10/16- Sacrament Class for Reconciliation & Confirmation meeting for those in 7th grade or their first year of Confirmation preparation.
10/23- Sacrament Classes- Reconciliation and Confirmation
10/30- Parent Class
How would you like to bless another family this year with something as simple as prayers? I am looking for parishioners to pray for Parish Religious Education, PRE, families. These families will be learning about the seven sacraments this year and some of them will even have family members making their First Reconciliation/ Communion or Confirmation. There is a basket on the table at the back of church. Please pick a card and pray for this family through our PRE year, now through April. What a wonderful way to share God’s goodness with others…prayer.
Spending Time with the Saints
This year, during our Wednesday evening Family Classes for Religious Education (PRE), we decided to add something new. During the months of September, October, November, February, March, and April, we will be doing Saints and S'mores!
At our Family Classes during these months, we will do our closing prayer acknowledging and praying to certain Saints and then enjoying S'mores!
For each of these 6 classes, we will need graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars. If you would like to donate to this part of our program to offset the costs of these items…it would greatly appreciated.
Please contact Sue Reed in the Parish Office or put your donation in an envelope labeled S'mores and place it in the weekly collection basket. Thank you for being supportive of this wonderful program.
Boxes of Joy!
The Parish Religious Education (PRE) and St Bernadette School students are working together once again this year to fill Boxes of Joy. We will fill these boxes with goodies and then they will be distributed to children in Guatemala, Dominican Republic, and Malawi. We want them to have a very Merry Christmas. There will be a list in the back of church on the bulletin board, please help us out and donate some items. A collection box will be in the back as well. Also, it is $9.00 per box to mail so a monetary donation is also greatly appreciated. Contact Sue Reed in the Parish Office for more information.
This year we will once again be doing the Boxes of Joy. Collection of items will be in September and October. If you would like to shop for some items now, that would be great. We will have a collection basket in the back of the Church.
A couple of "Boxes of Joy" team members went on a mission trip, and below are some of the items they noticed the children really liked:
Playing cards, card games (UNO, GO FISH, etc.)
Crochet hooks and yarn,
Craft items or kits, (beads, pipe cleaners, bracelet string)
Small playing balls, (can be deflated)
Matchbox cars
Lego sets
Solar digital watches
Calculators.
Remember that we can not include liquid of any kind in these boxes.
Continue to watch for more Boxes of Joy information!

Today we celebrate Deacon Sunday! What does a deacon do? These selfless servants are fully ordained clergy, reporting directly to the archbishop. Deacons proclaim the word of God, give homilies, visit the sick, teach the faith, provide counsel, perform funeral and burial services outside of the Eucharist, distribute Holy Communion, perform baptisms, and witness marriages, among countless other responsibilities that assist pastors and their communities.
Please consider honoring these men by praying for them and praising God for their gifts of service and charity. St. Lawrence, patron saint of deacons, pray for our invaluable deacons here at St Bernadette and Holy Ghost!
Are you being called to serve the Lord and others in the consecrated life or priesthood? Contact Father Boyd or email: vocations@archomaha.org.
